Kwon Jinkyu (1922-1973) is highly recognized as a pioneer of modern Korean sculpture.

Kwon Jinkyu studied at Musashino Art School (now Musashino Art University) in the 1950s, and has received prizes at the Nikaten, the exhibition of the Nikakai (Second Division Society). In spite of his close connection with Japanese sculpture circles, Kwon's realism-based works filled with deep spirituality unfortunately receive little publicity in Japan. Combined with the Musashino-Art-University venue, this is the first exhibition in Japan that provides a full view of Kwon's sculpture.

This show has been made possible through the joint researches and planning by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Musashino Art University Museum & Library, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea.

After shown simultaneously at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (Gallery 4 at the second floor) and at Musashino Art University Museum & Library, this exhibition will travel to the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea (Deoksugung Art Museum).

♦ Including those produced in Japan, most works of Kwon Jinkyu are now housed in Korean collections, such as those of art museums, foundations and individual collectors. This exhibition will also present pieces newly found in Korea and Japan to provide a full view of Kwon's art.

♦ In Japan, the show will be held simultaneously at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (Gallery 4 at the second floor) and at Musashino Art University Museum & Library.

♦ The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo will present about thirty carefully selected sculptures (including terra cottas and reliefs), notably Knight (1953) that won the Special Prize at the 38th Nikaten, Chi-Won , originally titled Aeja(1967) and Nun Shunyo (1967) that were donated to our museum after the 1968 solo exhibition, as well as watercolors and drawings.

♦ Musashino Art University Museum & Library will present about 100 pieces to offer a broad view on the diverse developments of Kwon's art.

Kwon Jinkyu (1922-1973) studied sculpture at Musashino Art School (now Musashino Art University) from 1949 until 1953 and returned to Korea in 1959. While attracting wide attention with his portraits filled with deep spirituality, he died in 1973, saying: "Life is vanity, ruin."
