Until you notice the human forms scattered across this work, it seems to be an abstract painting. This is not because we cannot identify a specific image, but due instead to the free-wheeling behavior of the paint behaves. This effect is created by a staining technique, in which thinly diluted paint is applied to an unprimed canvas to cause bleeding. The movement of the uncontrolled paint recalls the surface of the water.
