Configuration of multiple forms on a pedestal, and forms with indentations, are elements that Hepworth had been working with since the 1930s. The word \u201cfigure\u201d in the title can be taken in the general sense of a \u201cshape\u201d or \u201cform,\u201d but the fact that four similar forms are arrayed at different angles so they seem to face one another invites the more specific interpretation of \u201cfigure\u201d as meaning humanoid form. Reflecting one another, the surrounding viewers, and the venue, the gold-tinted bronze wedge shapes evoke various associations.
