One of the largest collection exhibitions in Japan, the MOMAT Collection presents 200 works at a time, selected from our collection of nearly 14,000 items including Japanese- and Western-style paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs and videos dating from the end of the 19th century to the present day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exhibitions are refreshed every two or three months, with significant changes in the works on display. Even regular visitors will be able to find something new every time. Not sure where to begin? Start with the Highlight Corner,  which features a variety of familiar works, or the relaxing Nihon-ga (Japanese-style Painting) Corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MOMAT Collection Galleries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The MOMAT Collection comprises twelve (sometimes thirteen) rooms and two rest areas on three floors. Sculptures are also shown near the terrace on the second floor and on the grounds in front of the Museum.  A Room With A View, a rest area with chairs and windows overlooking the Imperial Palace grounds, is on the fourth floor. There are also chairs placed throughout the Museum. The MOMAT Collection entrance is on the fourth floor and continues down to the third and second floor.<\/p>\n\n\n

More Information About MOMAT\u2019s Collection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\n
\n

There are 18 nationally-designated Important Cultural Properties in the collection: twelve Nihon-ga (Japanese-style) paintings, five oil paintings, and one sculpture. Among them, one Nihon-ga painting and one oil painting are on loan. Notable acquisitions include the archive of 600 artworks, sketches, diaries, letters and other items that belonged to the painter Kishida Ryusei, approximately 3,000 drawings by the sculptor Wakabayashi Isamu, and 153 paintings on indefinite loan from the United States documenting the Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War. The collection is centered on modern Japanese art, but the museum also collects contemporary artwork from overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MOMAT Collection, a themed exhibition of works from the collection that is rotated five times a year, displays about 200 of these works at any given time. Every year, approximately 250 works are also on loan to art museums in Japan and abroad.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
