Commentary

Bursting with energy, comical, and at the same time somewhat terrifying, this female figure makes an unforgettable impact. Is she laughing, dancing, screaming, or in shock? The powerful impression comes not only from the distinctive personality with which the figure is rendered, but also from the vivid color effects. These colors were obtained using textile dyeing techniques, rather than repeatedly applying paint with a brush. In 1955, Akutagawa (Madokoro) Saori was selected by Okamoto Taro for the 40th Nika-kai art association exhibition, in the 9th gallery where avant-garde works were customarily shown, and was catapulted into the limelight. This striking work was exhibited at that time.
