The following is a poem by the artist Ikemura Leiko: “Girls, be sure and touch the earth / When you lay down / you’ll be able to move back and forth / between this world and the next one.” The mystique of this poem is bolstered by the choice of materials, colors, and motifs in this work. The multiple layers of paint permeate the coarse jute, creating a blurring effect. A band of light extends across the black background. Or perhaps this is a young girl lying on her stomach as she moves her hands back and forth.
