The painting was made while Nara was living in Germany. As far as we can tell from the picture, this child is genderless. It might look like a weird cat costume, but this enables us to exchange straight glances with the “harmless kitty.” And since we can visually ascertain that the tail has been retouched, we cannot rule out the idea that this was in part intentional.
