Take a minute and try to imagine how you might imitate this kind of pose. Put both knees together, twist your torso to the right, and twist your face even further to the right as you point it upward. This makes it clear that the figure’s entire body has a rising spiral form. Ogiwara helped increase the French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s influence in Japan. The defining feature of this work is its dynamic twisting movement. Incidentally, Ogiwara was apparently secretly in love with Soma Kokko (1876–1955), the proprietress of the Nakamuraya bakery-cum-culture salon in Shinjuku. The woman in this posthumous work is also said to bear a strong resemblance to Soma.
