Hours and Access

When is the museum open?

We are open 10 am-5 pm. (Fridays and Saturdays open until 8 pm)

Admission until 30 minutes before closing.

When is the Museum closed?

We are closed on Mondays (open on holiday Mondays and closed on the following day),

during installation periods, and New Year holidays. For irregular openings and closings, please check the Calendar or News page.

How can I get to the Museum?

See the Access page.

I would like to come to the Museum by car. Is parking available?

There is no parking lot at the Museum.

Please use a paid parking lot in the vicinity, such as: 

Kitanomaru Park paid parking

Palace Side Building paid parking

There are limited parking spaces available onsite strictly for people with physical disabilities. Ask a security guard for access.

Exhibitions

How much is admission?

Admission differs between the collection exhibition and special exhibitions.

Check the Tickets page for details.

Is there a free admission day?

Admission to the Collection Exhibition is free on the following dates:

  • International Museum Day (May 18) 
  • Culture Day (November 3)

Except when either day falls on a Museum closing day.

Photography

Can I take photographs in the Museum?
  • Still photography is permitted in the collection galleries. Check signage for photo permission information when entering special exhibitions.
  • No flash or tripods allowed. Works marked with a “no photography” sign may not be photographed for copyright reasons. Please carefully read the precautions posted in the elevator lobby on the fourth floor before taking pictures. 
  • Making notes is permitted in the galleries (pencil only, pencils are available to borrow).
May I use photographs taken in the Museum? May I use images of art works from your website?

Please note that:

  • Photographs taken by museum visitors are not permitted for commercial use.
  • Modifications are not permitted.
  • Use of photographs showing exhibits may constitute violation of copyright laws.
  • Use of the artwork images on this website is not permitted.

Services

Can I eat or drink in the Museum?

In order to protect the artworks, eating and drinking inside the Museum is not permitted. We ask visitors to hydrate in the shaded rest areas outside the Museum where a vending machine is installed.

Do I have to pay admission to visit the shop, the restaurant, or the library?

There is no charge to enter the shop, restaurant, or library.

Opening hours may differ from the museum so please check online before coming.

Can infants enter the Museum?

There are no restrictions on infants entering the Museum.

However, if young children are disturbing other visitors, we may ask you to temporarily step out of the exhibition gallery. (Re-entry is permitted by asking the attendant.) Please note that for reasons of safety we may ask you not to use a baby carriage if the Museum building is crowded.

Are there cribs, rooms for nursing mothers, or childcare services?

There are no cribs, but there are diaper changing stations in the multi-purpose toilets (1F, 2F). There is a nursing room on the first floor.

There are no childcare services, but if there is a problem, please feel free to speak to an attendant.

Are baby carriages or wheelchairs available to borrow?

Yes. Please inquire at the information desk on the first floor.

Do people accompanying visitors with a disability have to pay admission?

Admission is free for one person accompanying a visitor with a documented disability.
