Although this work depicts a ranch along the Tanesashi Coast in Aomori Prefecture, the painting is imbued with the universal quality of an imagined scene due to its simple composition in which everything unnecessary has been eliminated from the landscape. Higashiyama explained, “I made the sky above the distant hills bright, and by making the far-off stretch of road rise up slightly to the right and disappear outside of the picture, I tried to emphasize the road that lay ahead.” The road is invested with the hope that Japan would make a fresh start after the war.
