Commentary

The model for this painting was a woman named Odagiri Mineko. Extremely talented and fluent in five languages, Odagiri was also known by the Chinese nickname Chin-Jung. If you look closely, you will notice an unnatural revision Yasui made to the figure’s left shoulder. This section looks similar to one of the artist’s sketches in which the model was captured in a more frontal position. When Yasui painted a portrait, he would spend a long time sketching his model from a variety of angles. Then by intentionally combining different body parts from sketches with various viewpoints in an unbalanced way, he would create the impression that the figure might begin moving at any moment.
