Commentary
Using his five-year-old son as a model, Koide’s picture looks simple but is actually quite complex. Take a look at the boy’s clothes. Perhaps because they are wool knits, lines run across them in every direction – vertically, diagonally, horizontally. His tie is the same. A shadow has been added to them, but it is depicted with a distinctive lack of reality. The way that the dividing line between the floor and wall runs through the picture at an angle is also effective. Coupled with the colors, the distance from the boy to the wall appears to vary considerably between the top and the bottom of the picture. Looking closer, the boy’s left foot also seems to be sticking out a little further than the right one. There is an amazing amount of movement for a painting of a boy standing upright without any expression.
