Commentary

People are rendered as small black shapes, in stark contrast to the vivid colors of the cityscape. The row of utility poles starting around the center dwindles sharply into the distance on the right, creating a heightened sense of perspective. In the left-hand foreground is a wide road, but dark shapes on it resembling puddles keep the overall composition drawn in. Are the shapes on the lower right people? If they are, they represent observers of this street scene other than ourselves, and our thoughts naturally turn to the impressions this urban hustle and bustle must have made on people at the time.
