Commentary

Kishida made three major stylistic changes during his career. He began with a style that was reminiscent of van Gogh, and then single-mindedly devoted himself to detailed depictions before adopting an Eastern style that referenced old Chinese and Japanese painting. The surprising thing is that all three of these styles exerted a major influence on the history of Japanese modern painting. This painting, from the detailed-depiction era, is the first work in Kishida’s famous series of portraits of his beloved daughter Reiko. In the upper part of the picture, there is an arch-shaped frame, and when you look closely, you realize that the entire work is a trompe l’oeil; or in other words, a painting of a framed painting of Reiko.
