Commentary

This work is constructed out of things that had hardly been used as art materials before such as wood scraps, fabric, tin, hair, and photogravure prints from foreign magazines. As Murayama affixed a variety of both hard and soft materials to the surface, the result initially seems quite chaotic, but due to the grid structure and the contrast between the square timber that protrudes from the upper left and the arrow pointing downward, we can sense the artist’s architectural intentions. The work can also be seen as the embodiment of urban dynamism as the city underwent a process of rapid modernization.
