Commentary
Fujita portrayed himself with his distinctive bowl haircut, accompanied by his beloved inkstone, brushes, framed picture of a female figure, cat, and other items. This is a rare example of a painting that retains its original surface as it was at the time of creation. Paint is thinly layered on top of a smooth milky white ground with the aim of causing light to reflect off the base layer, achieving a unique surface that is homogeneous, matte, and yet conveys a sense of moist luminosity. Attention to detail in the rendering of textures, such as that of the rough brown side of the matchbox where matches have been struck and that of the inkstone, should not be overlooked.
