Commentary

Using minute lines, the artist depicts a complicated intersection between a national railway overpass and steel power poles beyond a bridge. The surface of the river, covered with a field of color, does not convey any sense of movement. The human figures on and at the foot of the bridge are shown in silhouette, exuding a sense of loneliness. The title alludes to Tsukimi Bridge, which spans the Aratama, a river that flows near Yokohama Station. Matsumoto used the bridge as the subject in many sketches and oil paintings. In May 1945, 34 percent of the Yokohama municipal area was reduced to ashes in the Great Yokohama Air Raid. The area around Tsukimi Bridge was also razed to the ground. Matsumoto revisited the site not long after the war and also depicted the devastation he found there.
