Commentary
Until you notice the human forms scattered across this work, it seems to be an abstract painting. This is not because we cannot identify a specific image, but due instead to the free-wheeling behavior of the paint behaves. This effect is created by a staining technique, in which thinly diluted paint is applied to an unprimed canvas to cause bleeding. The movement of the uncontrolled paint recalls the surface of the water. According to the artist, the landscape is rooted in his memory of taking his children to a giant park in Berlin many years ago.
