Commentary

The unique texture of Izumi Kato’s works hinges on his technique of applying paint to a coarse canvas with gloved hands rather than a brush. As borne out by Kato’s assertion that a painting is meaningless unless it is flat and contains complex information, this work is truly a collection of many colors and myriad textures. The reason Kato’s works are often described as “primitive” stems not only from his depiction of faces that are reminiscent of folk art, but also from a density of information that can sometimes take on the appearance of a landscape as we gaze at it.
