Commentary

Hamaguchi won the National Museum of Modern Art Award (Japan Grand Prize) at the 1st International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo. This work is among those he showed at that time. The tense relationship between subjects, or between subjects and their surroundings, highlights the overall sense of tranquility and poetic feeling. It is probable that Hamaguchi earned the award in recognition of a distinctively Japanese sensibility based on the traditional sense of “ma” (space between), which stands in contrast to Western still life.
