Commentary

When this work was shown in the Abstraction and Fantasy exhibition held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in 1953, the art critic Takiguchi Shuzo wrote in a review: “This work is composed of lightweight metal plates of various shapes, balanced and suspended from the ceiling, and when exposed to a light breeze or moderate air movement, it softly begins to move. This changes in shape as it moves are intriguing. Although the mechanical construction of the metal seems slightly cold and heavy, it is remarkable as a trailblazing example of a sculptural mobile in Japan.” (Asahi Shimbun, December 10, 1953, Tokyo evening edition).
