Commentary
On a pedestal resembling a plaza stand four wedge-like forms, one of which has a hole in the center. Configuration of multiple forms on a pedestal, and forms with indentations, are elements that Hepworth had been working with since the 1930s. The word “figure” in the title can be taken in the general sense of a “shape” or “form,” but the fact that four similar forms are arrayed at different angles so they seem to face one another invites the more specific interpretation of “figure” as meaning humanoid form. Reflecting one another, the surrounding viewers, and the venue, the gold-tinted bronze wedge shapes evoke various associations. Are they waiting, and if so for what?
