Commentary

This egg, made of polyester resin, contains a variety of objects. This piece was created for a performance in which the egg was taken out into the city in order to disturb everyday life. Prior to acquiring this work, MOMAT already had two of Nakanishi’s early works, which consisted of heaps of sand, and one of his paintings from the ’80s. But we did not have anything from his Compact Object series. To remedy this, we bought this work in 2013. In researching the work, we were extremely pleased to find that it had been shown at the museum as part of the New Generation of Japanese Sculptors exhibition in 1963. In other words, the work returned to the museum exactly 50 years later as part of the MOMAT collection.
