The shape and color of this work have a pretty simple appearance. But the fulcrum is actually slightly off center, and the edges are rough, making the work quite complex. As a result, its character changes drastically depending on where you are standing – sometimes recalling a human body, other times looking more like a pure abstraction. During this period, Smith attempted to integrate the characteristics of painting into sculpture. He made the five works in the Circle series in 1962 and 1963, with Circle IV being the earliest one. In some cases, Smith numbered his works without any relation to the order he made them in.
