What makes this work attractive is the fact that it simultaneously conveys a sense of hardness (created by the steel) and a unique sense of lightness. This is not only because the work is painted but also because the structure conveys a strong feeling of movement and a lack of stability while minimizing the points of contact. Caro began working on his Table Piece series of tabletop sculptures 1966. As in this work, the sculptures entwine themselves around the stand and protrude from or hang over the edge. With this style, Caro advanced the new concept of using a table or pedestal as part of the work’s structure, rather than as a systemic device that separates the sculpture from the rest of the world.
