Commentary
This work is notable for Takamine’s use of two tons of oil-based clay to create a kind of clay animation, and the incorporation of the artist’s own form in everyday scenes. A gigantic head sings “God Bless America.” Around the time this work was made, the song was frequently being sung in the U.S. in the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. A closer look suggests that the head was modeled on George Bush, who was president at the time. Since it is unclear whether he is being forced to sing and whether the man and the woman are being forced to act, we sense the artist’s complex feelings about America.
