About
This year MOMAT purchased a work entitled Emancipation of Humanity, a bold female nude painted by the female artist Maruki Toshi. This exhibit was inspired by both this work and its title. In the first small room are images of women by male painters of the early 20th century and the 1950s. In the same room are works by female artists from soon after World War II through the 1950s. These are followed by abstract art from the 1960s and the 1970s, video art of the 1970s focusing on women’s roles, and photos from the 1980s reconsidering concepts of beauty and the body. Most are by female artists, but there are also works exploring sexuality by male artists.
