Commentary

Despite the title, Rain, the only thing depicted in this work is roofing tiles. A closer look, however, does reveal scattered traces of raindrops. The painting is a straightforward depiction of the following scene: “One day when I opened the window in anticipation of a sudden evening shower, large drops of rain had already begun to fall a little. On top of the tiles, heated by the midsummer sun, the drops left large streaks of rain, which repeatedly disappeared, reappeared, and then disappearing again.” Through a very slight manipulation realism approaches abstraction, and this, one of Fukuda’s signature techniques, is clearly evident in this work.
