Commentary

A man stands next to signpost. We cannot see his face, but he seems to be gazing off into the distance. Is he perplexed about whether to go left or go right? The quo vadis of the title means “Where are you going?” in Latin. Considering that the painting was made when Japan was still in the depths of postwar chaos, it is easy to imagine, even seeing this man from behind, that he cannot decide which way to go. In the middle distance on the left is a procession holding red banners aloft, while on the right a dark storm is raging. Which way to go? The man’s choice is left to the viewer’s imagination, but the flowers blooming at the base of the milestone seem to hint at his path forward.
