Commentary

In 1940, commemorative events were held in various places around Japan to celebrate the 2600th anniversary of the first Emperor Jimmu’s accession to the throne. This work was on display at an art exhibition marking the occasion, under the title Gasho, the meaning of which evidently relates to celebration through image and form. There is something like fukusa (silk wrapping cloth), considered auspicious, at the top of the picture. However, it is only a part of a pile of fragments, such as pieces of wood and cut-and-pasted photographs. Was the artist (a woman) somewhat less enthralled with the triumphal occasion than her contemporaries?
