Commentary

In 1940, commemorative events were held in various places around Japan to 2600 years since the enthronement of Emperor Jimmu, regarded as Japan’s first emperor. This work was on display at an art exhibition marking the occasion, under the title Gasho, the meaning of which evidently relates to celebration through image and form. There is something like fukusa (silk wrapping cloth), considered auspicious, at the top of the picture. However, it is only a part of a pile of fragments, such as pieces of wood and cut-and-pasted photographs. One wonders how the artist perceived the state of the world at that time.
