About the Exhibition

This is the fourth exhibition in the series that explores the present situation of photography through remarkable work of young and mid-career photographers.

In Japanese photography circles, galleries run by photographers themselves have developed diverse activities since the 1970s. Recent years have seen a resurgence of the trend that is attracting rising attention. Noteworthy activities are appearing one after another also in the forms of photo books and booklets called “zine.” Many of them are independently produced. This exhibition focuses on activities of photographers who prepare for themselves media and places to introduce their works.

Highlights

Working with their respective partners, Arimoto and Murakoshi run their own galleries in Tokyo where they frequently give exhibitions. Having started their career by participating in the same independent gallery, Motoyama and Nakamura are also known for their unique photo books produced independently. Exploring the earliest photographic technique called daguerreotype, Arai begins his work by personally preparing a photosensitive metal plate for image fixing.

Needless to say, they introduce their works also through the existing media and places such as photographic magazines and galleries, and use websites and social media as the measures for publishing their works and dispatching information. Nevertheless, their activities from shooting to publishing seem never to lose the focus on the connection with the real, resistant, “true-to-life” world.

Murakoshi has kept shooting landscapes in Fukushima, his home, for many years. This exhibition also has, just as his works do, an aspect that highlights “photography today” facing the reality after the earthquake disaster. Under the circumstances, this exhibition focuses on the continuous efforts of the five photographers in facing the world every day through photography and actively publishing their works, to explore the present situation of photography.
