About

The Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art is made up of five museums: the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; the National Museum of Western Art; the National Museum of Art, Osaka; and the National Art Center, Tokyo. Launched in April 2001, the institution celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. Following ”Shadows: Works from the National Museums of Art”, held at the National Art Center, Tokyo in 2010, this exhibition, a concerted effort by all five facilities, marks the second event to draw on the museums’ collections.

This exhibition, ”No Museum, No Life?―Art-Museum Encyclopedia to Come From the Collections of the National Museums of Art”, takes the museum itself as its theme. Based on 36 keywords, arranged in alphabetical order from A to Z, and inspired by the structure and function of the museum, the exhibition presents a special selection of approximately 170 works from the wide-ranging collections of the national museums, which stretch from the pre-Christian era to the present, and from the East to the West. In addition to the works, the exhibition incorporates displays of documents related to museum activities. Visitors to the exhibition will be treated to an experience akin to walking through a museum-themed encyclopedia.
