Ei-Q 1935–1937: Seeking the “Real” in the Dark
Date
Location
Art Museum Gallery 4
About
After making strong debut with his collection of photograms Nemuri no Riyu (lit. the reason of sleep) in 1936, Ei-Q (real name: Sugita Hideo, 1911–1960) searched for his original image freely using various techniques. The museum recently acquired his works and materials formerly owned by painter Yamada Koshun who was a friend of Ei-Q and wrote a critical biography of the artist. Presenting fifty works and letters that have never been shown, this exhibition illustrates how Ei-Q struggled to discover the “real” in his early career.
