About the Exhibition

Crafts have much to do with the human body. For instance, dolls are inspired by human figures. Since the distant past when dolls were used as representations in magic and rituals, dolls have been produced under the primary condition that they should represent human figures. Above all, such representations seem to be endowed with the ability to arouse our interest and empathy.

Sizes and touches of vessels and kimonos have been well thought out using the human body as measuring standards. Vessels show a great variety of sizes and forms, from those fitting in our hand to large ones that you couldn’t even get your arms around. Diverse forms that fulfill our various wishes enrich our life. In addition to protecting our body, kimonos are devised to make the wearers seem elegant with ornamental patterns designed and arranged to be linked with the balance and motions of the body.

Let us focus also on the function of the body in the production processes of crafts. Hammering in which hard metal is hammered to create outlines and patterns at the same time, and glassblowing in which untouchably hot molten glass is inflated using blowpipes, are only a few examples of many craft techniques that let us intuitively observe the energy drawn by physical activities.
This exhibition delves into the charm of crafts from these three viewpoints. Please have a nice time in summer at the Crafts Gallery, enjoying stretching exercises of your head and heart.
