New Acquisition & Special Display| Medardo Rosso, Ecce Puer (Behold the Boy)

Date

Location

Gallery 4 (2nd floor)

About

We are exhibiting Ecce Puer (Behold the Boy) (c.1920 to 25), by the Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso, for the first time. Rosso began his career in Milan, then moved to Paris at the end of the 19th century. Although he was far from prolific, he made quite a few works that are considered highly important. Ecce Puer (Behold the Boy) depicts a subject Rosso pursued at the end of his career, and it is widely regarded as his finest work.

A major distinguishing feature of Rosso’s work is his use of wax. The translucence of this material lets the sculptures catch and diffuse light across their surfaces so that they seem to blend with the surrounding space. This quality contributes to descriptions of Rosso’s sculptures as painterly, and to considerations of their connection to French Impressionism.

In this exhibition, we explore several themes derived from Rosso’s art by showing it alongside works from his own time and from the present day. We hope you will take your time and enjoy these remarkable works to the fullest.
