About the Exhibition
Making free use of the model molding techniques, ceramic designer Sakaegi Masatoshi (b. 1944) handles all the processes from sketching to completion to connect user’s ideas to his own with unrestricted freedom, thus creating high-quality products. This exhibition focuses mainly on his everyday vessels to explore Sakaegi’s design thinking that extends over the acts of making and using.

Born in Asahi-shi, Chiba Prefecture.

Entered Musashino Art University Junior College of Art and Design
- 1966

Finished his major at Musashino Art University Junior College of Art and Design. Joined the design department of Seyei China, a leading maker of Western tableware in Nagoya, where he worked until 1969.
- 1969

Entered Aichi Prefectural Ceramics Vacation-Training School. Quit the school in autumn and became an assistant at Aida Yusuke Kenkyujo (laboratory) in Kasama-shi, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Divided his time between a job at a small ceramic plant producing tiles, novelties and tableware, and creative activities in evenings on design and ceramics painting (until around 1973).

Cofounded with Sugiura Toyokazu Ceramic Japan Co., Ltd., a company for planning, production and marketing of ceramic products.

Compact won a grand prize at the 16th International Industrial Design Competition, Valencia, Spain.
- 1998

Became a professor in design and crafts at the Department of Art, the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music (until 2009).

Became a professor emeritus at the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music.
