René Lalique: Elegant French Decorative Art Carrying on the Work of Émile Gallé and the Daum Frères

Date

Location

National Crafts Museum

About

The French craftsman René Lalique(1860-1945) was active both in the fields of jewelry and glass. During the late 19th- and early 20th-century, Europe saw the rise of Art Nouveau followed by another artistic style known as Art Déco. Beginning with his elegantly curved jewelry, Lalique created countless works that reflected the times, including vases, perfume bottles, and car mascots, which made the most of transparent glass and vivid colors.
Drawn primarily from the Iuchi Collection(deposited at the National Crafts Museum), this exhibition presents pieces by some of Lalique’s precursors, such as Émile Gallé (1849-1904) and the Daum Frères (Auguste,1853-1909; and Antonin, 1864-1930) along with craft and design works of the same era. In addition to Lalique’s jewelry and glass art, the exhibition includes exquisite glass works by Gallé and the Daums, and furniture and posters from the era to convey the atmosphere of this glorious time through a collection of epoch-defining pieces. Enjoy Lalique’s diverse creations in tandem with the world of French decorative art.
