About the Exhibition
Modern Japanese craft developed through the work of craftspeople who sought to create works grounded in individual aesthetic vision, giving rise to the diverse characteristics seen today. For individual makers, as well, tradition and innovation were always in tension. This struggle to engage fully with materials and techniques while simultaneously interrogating the very framework of the medium was a driving factor in the modernization of craft.
