近年、日本においてもアート・アーカイブについては十指を越えるシンポジウム、講演会が開かれ、大きな注目を集めるとともに、その整備が喫緊の課題*として議論され、国策的事業としての展開の必要も指摘されております。
1954 年以来、長年にわたりアメリカ美術のアーカイブの構築から近年におけるデジタル化の推進と公開をダイナミックに展開してきたワシントン・スミソニアン機構 のアーカイブズ・オブ・アメリカンアート（Archives of American Art : 以下、AAA）は、日本の我々にとっても目指すべき優れたモデルを示しています。
この度、AAAから副所長と情報資源部長をお招きして、公開講演 会を開催いたします。AAAからの来日と講演は、我が国でのアーカイブ議論の高まりがありながら、この度、初めて実現する次第です。アートに限らず、今 後、日本のアーカイブ事業に多くの示唆を得る絶好の機会になることと祈念いたしております。
なお、本事業は標記の科学研究費によるものであり、本紙末尾に記載の慶應義塾大学アート・センターのワークショップとも連携しております。

講師の紹介
副所長 リザ・キルウィン博士
Dr. Liza Kirwin | Deputy Director of the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art
Liza Kirwin is the Deputy Director of the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art, where she oversees staff responsible for acquisitions, exhibitions, public programs, digital resources, reference services, archival processing, and publications, including the Archives of American Art Journal.
She received her Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park.
She is the author of More Than Words: Illustrated Letters from the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art; Artists in Their Studios: Images from the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art; With Love: Artists’ Letters and Illustrated Notes; and in 2012 she was awarded the Smithsonian Secretary’s Research Prize for her exhibition catalogue, Lists: To-dos, Illustrated Inventories, Collected Thoughts, and Other Artists’ Enumerations.

Karen B. Weiss | Head of Digital Operations of the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art
Karen Weiss is the Head of Digital Operations at the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art, where she oversees implementation of the Archives’ strategic goals to digitize collections and make them accessible to the public. She has overall responsibility for the Archives’ collection information systems, website, and stewardship of digital assets.
Since 2005, Ms. Weiss has directed a major grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art involving the work of archivists, information professionals, imaging specialists, and web developers. Her article, “Collections Online: An Archival Approach to Digitization and Web Accessibility in the Archives of American Art” appeared in Collections: A Journal for Museum and Archives Professionals (Summer 2010).
In 2013 she shared the Smithsonian Institution’s Secretary’s Award for Digital Enterprise. Ms. Weiss holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Maryland, College Park.
