About

Bashofu is said to be “the most Okinawan weaving, born out of the Okinawan climate.” Bashofu is a type of fabric woven from a thread made of fiber extracted from the leaf sheath of a plant called “ito-basho” and is popular as a cool fabric, especially in hot summer weather. Until the Meiji era, it was produced in many areas of Okinawa, but as a result of social and economic shifts and the influence of the war, the production skills are now only handed down amongst the women of Kijoka, in Ogimi Village, on the main island of Okinawa.

The production of bashofu in Kijoka begins with the cultivation of ito-basho plants. The entire process of making the fabric after harvesting the plants, from spinning dying and weaving, is done by hand with natural materials. The fabric has an ikat pattern called “kasuri,” which is a unique feature.

This exhibition is being held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kijoka bashofu being designated as an important intangible cultural property. We are delighted to introduce TAIRA Toshiko (1921-2022), an important intangible cultural property holder who worked tirelessly to revitalize bashofu techniques that faced extinction after the war, and her studio, as well as historical masterpieces of bashofu.
