Where design is found―from the Museum Collection

About
Do you know that the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo includes design works?
Since 1988, when the museum acquired works by designers including Christopher Dresser known as a pioneer of industrial design and Pierre Chareau renowned for his Art-Deco-style furniture, its design collection has grown steadily to comprise 192 industrial design and 776 graphic design works*. Through selected 120 design works with some craft works, this exhibition tries to answer the question “Where is design found?” from the viewpoints of borders, domains and time. While the word “design” has become common among us and is heard in different situations, its definition and implications vary depending on contexts, places and individuals. We hope this exhibition provides an opportunity to reconsider the elusive “design”
