Why do we love patterns? People may say that “less is more” when it comes to design, yet patterns continue to decorate all manner of things.
There is something about them that excites the eye, the heart, and the mind.
The world of patterns is endlessly varied. Sometimes we turn plants and animals into cute little motifs, fitting them inside circular or diamond-shaped frames, while driving rain, falling snow, and rising steam are rendered as neat rows of droplets, snowflakes, or curling lines. From the natural world and everyday objects to the marks left by physical and chemical processes, there is nothing that cannot take on patterned form. The world of patterns is a collection of people’s favorite things and their heartfelt wishes, and when a pattern catches our eye, that spark of excitement seems to reach us as well.
We have brought together around 140 outstanding works of modern and contemporary crafts that can be enjoyed by everyone, from first-time visitors to people who know crafts well and want to learn even more. On a summer day,we hope you will discover your own “favorites ♡” at the National Crafts Museum!
